An Overachiever of the Wrong Persuasion ([info]badmonkey77) wrote in [info]canadabound,
I'm still researching the possibility of going to Canada, and I have a couple of questions that aren't answered on the websites.

1. I have Type II diabetes. Would that prevent me from passing the medical exam?

2. My family immigrated from Canada to the US around the turn of the century. I don't have any living relatives that are Canadian, but I was wondering if having Canadian heritage helps in the immigration process at all.

Thanks!

My understanding of what they are looking for in the medical is anything that would cause a significant drain on Canadian society - be it hospital requirements, or social security. I don't know anything about diabetes, so I don't know if it would fall into this area.

And I would think the heritage would help if you were called for an interview, it's one of those intangible things that they might just like. But I doubt it would affect the application itself.

There are some rules that children and grandchildren etc. of canadians are canadians also, even if they never claimed canadian citizenship. You may check if that would apply to you.

Where can I find out more about this? My g-g-grandparents emigrated from Nova Scotia and Quebec.

Hmm... tryed CIC website: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizen/bornout-info.html

Looks like you are out of this case and have to apply as US citizen.

That's the same situation I'm in. My G-G-Grandparents came from new Brunswick, though.

Yeah, that's what I figured.

It's funny. They came down here in search of opportunity and now I'm dragging the genes right back, also in search of opportunity.

That depends on your definition of opportunity. I am going for political reasons and I'd also like to start a business. I can mentally relax a lot more in Canada.
